Hawley Retainer

The Hawley retainer is a removable retainer made from an acrylic baseplate with a labial bow and retentive clasps. We make Hawley retainers to your prescription, from your digital scan or impression.

What is a Hawley Retainer?

A Hawley retainer holds the teeth in their finished position after active orthodontic treatment. The acrylic baseplate covers the palate (upper) or sits lingual to the teeth (lower). A labial bow runs across the anterior teeth, and clasps, usually Adams clasps on the first molars, hold the retainer in place. Because the occlusal surfaces are left uncovered, it allows posterior settling of the occlusion. The labial bow can also be adjusted chairside for minor tooth movement.
